MORE CONCERNS AT DIPLOMA OPTIONS

England's new Diplomas can provide a commendable way to integrate academic and vocational study, MPs have said. But they could further complicate an already complex system, need further explanation and lack wide credibility, the public accounts committee says. The MPs say parents, employers and universities still need convinced Diplomas are a credible alternative. BBC

DRAGON JONES HEADS SKILLS ACADEMY

 Dragons' Den star Peter Jones is to head an academy to teach budding entrepreneurs tricks of the trade. The National Skills Academy for Enterprise will offer vocational courses for about 11,000 youngsters aged 16 to 19 in its first three years. BBC

FIRST SCHOOLS FACING CHARITY TEST

The first private schools to have to demonstrate a charitable purpose have been named by the Charity Commission. Five schools must prove they are not "exclusive clubs" as part of the public benefit review that will apply to all charity schools from April 2009. This is because the assumption that fee-charging schools, religious charities and care homes offer a public benefit has been removed in law. There have been fears that some schools may lose their charitable status. But the Charity Commission says it believes most independent fee-charging schools are likely to meet the test and that it is prepared to help those that do not.  BBC
