Pupils are dropping hard science subjects for A-level in favour of easier disciplines that they hope will earn them the grades needed for university, the state school watchdog says Tuesday.Ofsted also complains that science “lacks appeal” for many pupils because of “the way that it is taught”.The watchdog’s hard-hitting report on science will increase fears state schools are not doing enough to boost numbers of physicists, chemists and biologists, whom employers’ organisations regard as essential to Britain’s future economic competitiveness.Business leaders worry that a lack of scientists could force the pharmaceutical industry, one of Britain’s most successful sectors, to send an increasing amount of work offshore. The report may also increase complaints that Britain’s university system has become concerned primarily with churning out huge numbers of students who do not have knowledge that is highly esteemed by employers, rather than focusing on smaller numbers of highly valued graduates.FT
