Sellafield nuclear power plant will run one of the Government’s new academies to open in September. The power station is the largest single industrial site in Europe and its managers, Sellafield Ltd, will direct West Lakes Academy in Cumbria specialising in science and business enterprise. The University of Central Lancashire and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority are also involved in the academy, formed by a merger of two secondary schools. The academy will open in September in Egremont, near Sellafield. A spokesperson for the nuclear plant said: “Sellafield Ltd is key to Britain’s energy future and our ongoing support for the West Lakes Academy is part of a wider strategy to help reinforce the nuclear skills base in the UK and secure the inclusion of west Cumbria in the UK’s energy policy.” The planned academy is one of 400 proposed by the Government as part of its overhaul of Britain’s school system. Lord Adonis, the schools minister, said: "Academies are a key part of our relentless drive to raise standards in deprived areas across the country. In relatively short time they have been operating, academies have made remarkable progress and the future looks bright." Times
